Monthly Spotlight: William Monroe High School’s CTE Program

William Monroe High School in Greene County, Virginia, is home to a dynamic Career and Technical Education (CTE) program that empowers students with hands-on learning experiences and prepares them for successful futures. Senior Olivia, along with her teacher Mr. Derek Leake, and CTE director Miss Jess Peregoy, shared insights into the program’s impact on students during a recent Workforce Wednesdays podcast.

Olivia has explored a wide range of CTE courses, including nursing, sports medicine, welding, and auto mechanics. Her passion for hands-on learning led her to excel in welding and auto mechanics, where she recently placed fourth in a district Skills USA competition. Her experiences in CTE have shaped her career path, guiding her towards a role in the Coast Guard as a damage controlman, a position that combines carpentry, welding, plumbing, and pipe fitting.

The CTE program at William Monroe High School is committed to making students post-secondary ready, whether they choose to enroll in college, enlist in the military, or enter the workforce. The program has numerous success stories, with students graduating with multiple certifications and securing jobs in fields like HVAC, automotive, and restoration. The school’s work-based learning program has seen significant growth, doubling enrollment in just one year.

Mr. Leake engages students through hands-on projects and field trips to local businesses, providing real-world experiences that enhance their learning. The program’s collaboration with community colleges and business partners ensures students have access to a wide range of career opportunities.

William Monroe High School’s CTE program is dedicated to helping students find their passion and purpose, equipping them with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in their chosen careers.
